In a city
where fact is hard to tell from façade, and the ship of state
occasionally runs onto the rocks of unpleasant truth, it's easy
to see the importance--and the challenge--of keeping up appearances.
Whether it's spin, cover-up, makeover, or sleight-of-hand, there
is plenty of evidence that the way things seem matters as
much as the way they are, at least to some of us.
The Washington
Stage Guild proudly invites you to join us for another season of
literate and lively productions, four great plays that look behind
the masks we wear to see our true faces.
Join us for
our eighteenth season as we "keep up appearances" at Arena Stage
at 14th & T Streets in what looks like--and is--one of the area's
most exciting neighborhoods!

"Don't
underestimate the power of a glimpse of lingerie!"
A "wild and crazy" new version
of one of the cleverest satires of social customs ever written.
It's hard for a government clerk to preserve his anonymity---especially
after his wife drops her underpants in public!
Written before World War I and recently adapted by Steve Martin.

"What
makes a mystery beautiful is not the truth it conceals, but the
secret it enshrines."
A
reclusive writer agrees to a rare interview, but the questions are
not what he expects in this cat-and-mouse game of secrets revealed
and turned inside-out. This recent hit from London's West End was
translated by Jeremy Sams, whose work was previously seen by Guild
audiences in Cocteau's Indiscretions.

"The
prospect of Socialism destroying the family may not be altogether
unattractive."
Politicians
who are more concerned with reelection than with governing, rulers
considering war in order to silence dissent, trade officials agreeing
to policies that will bring disaster in the long run, simply because
they'll be popular now, and a cabinet member responsible for law enforcement
who threatens the opposition with charges of treason--sound familiar?
A prescient political cartoon by our favorite playwright!

Bernard Shaw : Directed

"The
man who returns will have to meet the boy who left."
The Piper family gathers at
Wishwood, a remote manor house, where dark revelations will
be made and the truth brought to light. T.S. Eliot's drama
is cast in the form of a conventional British thriller--but
the great Anglo-American poet's unparalleled language and
mystical concerns raise it to a level of significance
few modern plays have ever reached.
by T.S. Eliot : Directed by Bill Largess
